I go with RF 18 though so if I ever want to render it again at a more efficient format like AV1 and I have the processing power for that, while still giving it some more room to be compressed some more without losing quality. Probably not enough, as you are more than fine going into RF 19 or even 20 and still get the best quality, or at least not be able to tell the difference. RF 18 will give pretty much the same quality as the original rip while trimming down the size by a lot. If I need something compatible then I’ll do x264 on slowest, but generally I want the best quality and most efficient as possible without having to wait days for a process to finish, so I do x265 10-bit on slow.

Slow will give a faster render time than the other two settings, and once you get to medium the quality starts to drop off a decent amount - although a lot of people can’t really tell the difference. Placebo is unbearingly long and gives worse quality, slowest will give the closest to the original quality as possible, but you probably won’t tell the difference between that, slower, and slow. The only filter should be deinterlace (keep it on decomb) since that shouldn’t affect anything if there’s nothing wrong, but fix any interlacing issues if present, which is rare. X264 if you just want a compatible quick process, or x265 10-bit if you’re fine with a longer render time but want a more efficient format with a way smaller file size and slightly better video quality. Assuming you want to change either or both of those, which is a good guess since you’re on a handbrake subreddit, here’s what I’ve been doing.

MakeMKV will give you a free rip of the original quality, which is a huge file size and H.264. Plex is just easier and comes with a bunch of other advantages. I can't remember what to browse the network and then VLC to open the file.

This was doable on an Android phone using. It's also *much* easier to use than what I was doing before - which was keeping the ISOs on a network share and having to mount them to play back movies. Plex understands enough about MKV to make the different languages and subtitles available. I use Plex to make my media available to friends and family. and now I just use it because everything I've encoded so far has been done that way. To be honest I didn't really know what this mean when I started and was told faster meant larger files or worse image. For the video aspect I am using h.265x10, the default deinterlace filter, RF 18 and the Placebo speed setting.

I realise that this is a niche area - in my extended group we all speak English but my partner is also fluent in German and is learning French, her brother's family is English/Chinese and I am learning Spanish. I keep all of the audio and subtitles so we have the options of switching languages. I use Handbrake to encode just the video stream.

I use MakeMKV to pull the guts of the movie out into a single file. It also removed region-locking and PUOs (so you can skip the ads at the beginning of the disk). This way I still have the original material if I ever want to reencode. H.265, 10-bit, Constant Framerate (match source), default decomb only, RF 18, Placebo, pass-thru ALL sound and include ALL subtitles.
